TEACHING PHILOSOPHY
Teaching and learning happens classrooms, but it also happens in forests, on sports fields, at community festivals, in gardens and grandparents’ kitchens. A reflective, iterative, data-driven decision process defines my teaching philosophy, where student-centered learning guides decisions. I aim to connect students' lived experiences with what we discuss within the classroom, where students find support in cultivating their own curiosity.
TEACHING EXPERIENCE
TEACHING ASSISTANT
While at Cornell, I've had the pleasure of being a teaching assistant for Watershed Engineering, Investigative Biology, and Environmental Physics over five semesters. My interest in teaching has led to two teaching-as-research projects that has enhanced my understanding of the iterative processes that go into designing and modifying courses.
UNDERGRADUATE RESEARCH MENTOR
The enthusiasm & curiosity of undergraduate researchers during experimental design, sample collection, coding, analysis and writing inspired me to developed my planning, communication, and research oversight to facilitate these studies. From summer internships to senior theses to a multi-year macroplastic project, each of my relationships with undergraduate researchers has been exciting and unique.
COMPOST EDUCATOR
Tompkins County Cooperative Extension Master Composter program has allowed me to extend my interest in waste reduction, teaching, and outreach into short, 5-10 min interactions with town residents & visitors. Highlights include communicating the science of composting and trouble shooting residents' compost-related questions.
OUTDOOR EDUCATION INSTRUCTOR
Teaching with Cornell Outdoor Education was my first foray into education, allowing me to learn from my peer instructors, develop a reflective teaching style, and modify my teaching habits with immediate feedback in the context of 5-10 students per class in backpacking, wilderness survival skills, and cross-country skiing.
ULTIMATE FRISBEE COACH
Extending my teaching into the world of college sports has been a great way to continue to learn the importance of co-teaching, leadership development, and goal setting. As a part of the Wild Roses coaching staff, was a pleasure to be involved with this wonderful program.
